I’m at that age where one spends a lot of time reminiscing. Sharing fond memories with friends and colleagues. That has to stop. The reason is simple. I’ve become embarrassingly clumsy at it. More and more often I will be mid-anecdote when my synapses cease to function. My frontal lobe flatlines. For example, I was recently regaling an associate with the following: “So Jon Cryer had a terrifically funny kissing scene with... oh damn, um, help me out here, senior moment, the actress who was in all the Mel Brooks movies.” At which point my unfortunate listener helpfully suggests, “Madeline Kahn?” And while that doesn’t sound right, I say, “Yes, thank you,” and finish the story of how she stuck her tongue down Jon’s throat during a rehearsal. At which point my listener stares at me wondering why this is a good story. At which point I eat dinner at 6 p.m., go to sleep at 9 p.m., urinate at midnight, and once again at 3:48 a.m. — when I suddenly remember it’s a good story because the actress was Cloris Leachman.
